Navies

Last updated 5-Nov-98 by Bob Heeter

Navies are probably the most difficult units to deal with in WarBOT, but
the tips and examples given here should help you become an expert immediately.

REMEMBER TO MARK UNITS AS NAVIES IN WARBOT; IT IS NOT AUTOMATIC. From Mike Leung:
>Selecting the Water/Shore terrain will "enable" the boxes to be checked for navies,
>but it will not "automatically" mark a unit as a naval unit. You have to
>click on those check boxes next to the units to mark the units as navies -
>when you click on a box, a little X will appear in it and that unit is
>marked as a navel unit.

Navies never receive bonuses!

... but they do confer their usual bonuses upon non-naval units!

Navies only fight as navies in the water! At bridges or in cities, they
fight at their ground strength.  Note - bridges are considered open terrain;
any battle fought *on* a bridge is fought by units in their ground form,
regardless of whether they are navies otherwise.

Sometimes non-naval units are converted into navies when fighting over water!
You can't trust the "View Stack" screen. You have to actually look at the
battle to see which units are navies and which are not. The unit pictures
for the navies have little blue water-splashes around their base.

ALWAYS CHECK THE ACTUAL BATTLE SCREEN TO SEE WHICH UNITS ARE NAVIES AND WHICH
ARE NOT. A unit fighting as a navy will have blue water-splashes around the
base of its icon.

>Do naval units fighting a city take on their land based strengths & bonuses?
>I was always confused by this because the Mac Warlords manual states unequivocally that:
> "If attacking units are in boats their strengths are always 4".

However, it also states that when attacking cities, it takes on its native
strength. The statement that units in boats are always strength 4 only applies
in "Classic" Warlords when naval units are attacking non-land units.

>1. If a hero is in a navy, with no flight item, is his strength 4, with no
>bonus available?

Right, except that his bonus would still apply to non-naval units in his stack.
And he moves like a navy, i.e., not on land. In Classic Warlords it's
better to group a flyer with the hero and group them with the navy - they
benefit from the navy's movement in water but don't get penalized by
being forced to be navies themselves. This can be risky on offense in Deluxe,
though, since the hero may get converted to a navy when attacking with
a navy in his stack.

>2. If a hero WITH a flight item joins an existing navy,or visa versa, does
>the entire stack benefit from the hero bonus, and receive their regular
>strength?

Navies never receive bonuses. Only the units flying with the hero that
aren't navies *in the battle screen* maintain their normal base strength.
Sometimes ground units flying with the hero get converted to navies in
the actual battle. You can't trust the "View Stack" screen, you have to
actually look at the battle to see which units are navies and which are not.
The navies have little blue water-splashes around their base.

>3. If a pegasus and several heavy infantry navies attack a naval stack on
>the shore, consisting of a hero with flight item, several armies flying with
>the hero, and a few navies, are the attacker's strengths 6 for the pegasus
>and 4 for the remaining navies? And are the defending armies receiving the
>hero bonus and regular strength?

The attacking heavy infantry are indeed strength 4 as navies, and
the pegasus is still a 6.

The defending navies are at naval strength (4, possibly less in Deluxe)
and do not receive hero bonuses, but the defending units flying with the
hero are regular strength and do receive hero bonuses (and any other
applicable bonuses for Open terrain, including non-hero bonuses conferred
by the navies in the stack).
